Candor Institute Origin

Candor laws allow a health care provider or health facility that participates in Candor open discussions to provide de-identified information about an adverse health care incident to a nonprofit organization for use in patient safety research and education without waiving the Candor privilege. The Candor Institute was created for this express purpose. It is a registered Colorado nonprofit corporation and is classified as an Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) public charity.

While communication and resolution programs (CRPs) have been developed over the past two decades, the impact of legislation designed to encourage and facilitate the CRP process is unknown. A goal of the Candor Institute is to provide the needed education and research for health care providers and other entities implementing a Candor program within their organization.
